On Monday, September 16, 2024, the Pennsylvania State Senate resumed its first session after the summer break, featuring the special participation of Honorable Racheal Pessima and Presidential Adviser on Youth, Chairman Desmond Pessima, from Sierra Leone.
The distinguished visitors were hosted by Senator Judy Shwank, who welcomed them to the Senate chamber.
Hon. Racheal Pessima, a Member of Sierra Leone’s Sixth Parliament representing Port Loko District, used the opportunity to engage Senator Shwank on key initiatives she is leading back home.
Her agenda includes efforts in health promotion, education, and sports development, as well as advocacy for rape victims. She emphasized her commitment to advancing these areas to improve the lives of her constituents.
Chairman Desmond Pessima, representing the office of President Julius Maada Bio, outlined the president’s “Big Five” priorities, which include initiatives to enhance cocoa bean production, industrialization, technical training for youth, and education.
His visit aimed at fostering partnerships between Sierra Leone and the state of Pennsylvania, particularly in areas that could benefit from U.S. technical expertise and resources.
Senator Shwank expressed her enthusiasm about building stronger ties with Sierra Leone and exploring avenues for collaboration, especially in agriculture, youth empowerment, and education.
The visit concluded with an extensive tour of the Pennsylvania State Capitol, where the Pessima family was introduced to members of the Senate.
In a show of appreciation, the Pessimas received a standing ovation from the senators after their contributions and achievements were highlighted on the Senate floor.
The delegation also met with Senator John Kane, representing Chester and Delaware counties, who acknowledged the economic contributions of Sierra Leonean communities in the region and extended his best wishes to them through the Pessima family.
Earlier in the week, Senator Shwank and the Pessima family had shared the stage as co-guests of honor at the Sierra Leone Association’s Annual Fundraising Dinner in Reading, further strengthening the cultural and diplomatic ties between Sierra Leone and the state of Pennsylvania
