On November 3rd, 2023, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of Sierra Leone issued a stern caution to Principals of Senior Secondary Schools regarding the alarming issue of extortion and illegal charges through a press release.
The ACC held discussions at Integrity House, Tower Hill, Freetown, with school authorities in response to the unjust levying of fees contrary to the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education policy and the Anti-Corruption Act 2000 as amended in 2019.
Deputy Commissioner Augustine Foday Ngobie highlighted Section 128 (3) of the Anti-Corruption (Amendment) Act of 2019, emphasizing that engaging in corrupt practices during educational institution programs or examinations is an offense. He reiterated that such actions go against the ACC’s stance and the Ministry’s approved charges for public schools.
The ACC reinforced its stance that school authorities must not seek or accept advantages or bribes from parents and guardians, nor impose charges outside the approved fees by the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education. They warned that the Commission will swiftly investigate and prosecute any reported evidence of extortion or illegal levies in schools.
Furthermore, the public was encouraged to report such instances to the ACC at various office locations across the country or through designated hotlines. 077-985-985 and 077-986-986.
The ACC concluded by affirming its unwavering commitment to eradicating corruption in Sierra Leone, ensuring that such practices do not undermine the education system or burden parents and guardians unjustly. The directive stands to maintain transparency and fairness within the education sector, prioritizing accessible and corruption-free education for all.
