As over 700 teachers and head teachers set to be retired by August this year, the Government through the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) plan to recruit over 2,500 new teachers.
Politico newspaper reported the Executive Secretary of the Teaching Service Commission (TSC), Sorie Ibrahim Turay said there are plans for the recruitment of 2,800 teachers.
“In August when they go out, we expect the new cohort of teachers to go into payroll to replace them by the 1st of September 2023,” Turay said.
It is expected that 680 teachers will be retired by August 31, 2023 with payment of gratitude and monthly salary.
It is mandated by law that public servants are retired at age 60.
But there are concessions in the teaching field.
The TSC Executive Secretary said concessions will be given to teachers teaching Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture and Mathematics (STEAM) to extend their tenure up to age 65
The recruits are expected to fill in the empty spaces and further fill the void.
Meanwhile, there are concerns from newly promoted teachers for the Government to increase their salary as per their promotion.
The teaching profession is among the several understaffed professions in Sierra Leone. A large of bulk teachers are being paid stipends and technically not under government payroll.
Okay oh, that’s great! But up to now we still have teachers who filled the
November 2022 Ed form and up to now they have not receive any salary yet.
That’s true is too boring, from November till now no salary.
We hope not just words
It is a good news for teachers. But my only worry now is that the officials at the Teaching Service Commission are going to sell these pin codes to those who can afford to pay. It should be free according to govt. But tsc will ask you to pay not less than NLe 3,000 and above.
I’m so hurry about the uu teachers that have serving for over 5 years without being paid, I don’t know what government has plans for them, because they have the experience
What’s about Reassessment of teachers who have upgraded themselves?
Since February some submitted their new certificates and relevant documents for Reassessment but not yet address up to now.
Pls how true is the above claim of TSC demanding or requesting NLe 3,000 from teachers to be put on pay roll? Pls ACC take note of the above alligation because this is Sierra Leone and I personally cannot dispute it as mere indictment. Pls ensure that those deserving personalities also start to have hope in the future eventhougn salaries are not enough for civil servants in Sierra Leone.
