A strong message of perseverance, discipline, and moral responsibility resonated throughout the 181st Anniversary Speech Day and Prize-Giving Ceremony of the Sierra Leone Grammar School, as Guest Speaker Eric Massallay urged pupils to remain steadfast in doing what is right despite life’s challenges.
The historic ceremony, held on Thursday, 19 March 2026, brought together students, teachers, alumni, parents, and distinguished guests to celebrate academic excellence and the enduring legacy of one of the country’s most prestigious institutions.

Drawing from the biblical theme in Galatians 6:9 — “Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap if we do not give up,” Mr. Massallay emphasized that success is rooted in consistency, integrity, and resilience.
“Doing the right thing is not always easy,” he told the gathering. “There will be moments when success seems far away and efforts appear unnoticed. But we must never give up doing what is good.”

Reflecting on his own journey as a former pupil of the school, Mr. Massallay described the opportunity to address the gathering as a deeply personal and meaningful experience. He noted that the values instilled in him during his years at the Grammar School discipline, leadership, and service have remained guiding principles throughout his life.
He encouraged pupils to take their education seriously, describing it as a powerful tool for shaping their future and contributing to national development. He further advised them to remain disciplined, seek mentorship, and strive to become responsible citizens.

In a cautionary note, the Guest Speaker warned against harmful habits, particularly drug abuse, urging pupils to avoid substances such as tramadol and kush, which he said have destroyed the lives of many young people.
Mr. Massallay also congratulated prize-winning students while encouraging those who did not receive awards to remain focused and determined.
“Do not be discouraged,” he said. “Continue to work hard, believe in yourself, and keep doing what is good. Your time will come.”

He extended his message beyond the pupils, calling on parents to remain actively involved in their children’s education and urging alumni to continue supporting the growth and development of the institution.
The ceremony not only celebrated academic achievements but also reinforced the school’s longstanding tradition of nurturing well-rounded individuals committed to excellence and service.
Concluding his address, Mr. Massallay challenged pupils to uphold the legacy of the Sierra Leone Grammar School by embodying honesty, hard work, and a commitment to justice and peace.
“Our country and our world need young people who are committed to doing what is right,” he said. “If we remain steadfast, we will not only succeed as individuals but also build a better society.”

The event ended on a high note with the school’s traditional rallying call, reaffirming pride and unity among the Grammar School community.
