Times Higher Education a British magazine reporting specifically on news and issues related to higher education has ranked the University of Sierra Leone among Africa Top Universities in Africa.

The University of Sierra Leone, comprised of Fourah Bay College, the Institute of Public Administration and Management, and the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences. The University of Sierra Leone can trace its roots back to the 1820s and achieved university status in 2005.

The university has schools of arts, humanities, social science, law, basic and applied science, engineering and architecture. These are based on the campus at Mount Aureol, above the capital city, Freetown.

The Institute of Public Administration and Management was founded in 1980 and is based in the centre of Freetown. The college of medical and allied sciences was founded as Sierra Leone’s first medical school in 1988.

The 2023 rankings were formally released at the organization’s inaugural meeting in the region, which took place in June 2023 in collaboration with Ashesi University. University of Sierra Leone was ranked 23rd in Africa according to Times Higher Education.

The ranking is top by South Africa’s University of the Witwatersrand, according to the report. The University of Johannesburg and Tanzania’s Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences finished second and third, respectively
