Yusuf Ibrahim Kamara, fondly known as “The Wise Thinker,” has set a remarkable record at the University of Makeni (UNIMAK). He is the first Mass Communication student to successfully establish a fully operating media institution before completing his undergraduate studies.
At just 22 years old, Yusuf is the CEO, Publisher, and Managing Editor of Hope Times Newspaper — a bold venture that has already made waves in Sierra Leone’s media industry. His achievement has not only positioned him as a standout figure among his peers but has also inspired many young people across the country.
While pursuing his degree at UNIMAK, Yusuf demonstrated exceptional leadership. He served as the first-ever Director of Communication for the UNIMAK Students’ Representative Council’s Student Court, and currently acts as the Public Relations Officer for the UNIMAK Muslim Jamaat, as well as the Northern Region Ambassador for the National Union of Muslim Students.
Yusuf’s leadership journey began even before university. He was the founding President of the WMA School News Journal and held multiple leadership roles such as Senior Prefect, Chief Minister, Minister of Information, and News Producer. His communication skills were evident early on, earning him respect among his peers and teachers.
Beyond the university walls, Yusuf is actively shaping Sierra Leone’s media and humanitarian sectors. He heads media operations for the Revival of Islamic Faith Foundation International (ROIFFI) and the Sabikun International Humanitarian Foundation. As a journalist, he has contributed to leading publications like Capitol Times, Expo Times, Expo Magazine, and Home Times. He also served as a reporter and presenter at Wusum Radio FM 88.5 in Makeni.
His achievements have not gone unnoticed. In 2021, Yusuf was honored with the prestigious Media Award for Most Influential Journalist under ROIFFI—becoming the first and only journalist to win the award since its establishment. Prominent figures, including Dr. Sowayer from the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), have praised Yusuf’s efforts and vision at such a young age.
Now a proud graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication from the University of Makeni, Yusuf Ibrahim Kamara continues to inspire with his passion, leadership, and drive for excellence. He stands as a shining example of what determination, innovation, and commitment can achieve — breaking barriers and paving the way for a new generation of young media leaders in Sierra Leone.
