The Sierra Leone Government bade farewell to the 7th Chinese Military Medical Expert Group (CMMEG) after 20 months of dedicated service.
The ceremony, held at the Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone, was not just about saying goodbye it was a celebration of the lasting impact the group had on the country’s health sector and the beginning of a new chapter with the arrival of the 8th CMMEG.
Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Wang Qing, addressed the gathering with deep appreciation by sharing, “Your hard work has not only saved lives but also helped build lasting relationships.”
He highlighted their contributions, which included offering over 10,000 free medical consultations, training about 150 Sierra Leonean medical professionals, and spreading valuable knowledge about disease prevention in local communities. His words underscored the importance of the 7th CMMEG’s work, which had left an indelible mark on Sierra Leone.

Colonel (Rtd) Muana Massaquoi, the Deputy Minister of Defence, echoed this sentiment, thanking the outgoing team on behalf of President Julius Maada Bio and the Ministry of Defence. “You’ve been a vital part of improving the health of our people,” he said. “Your work will continue to impact Sierra Leone long after you leave.” He wished the 7th CMMEG a safe journey home and formally welcomed the 8th group, eager for the continuation of this invaluable partnership.

Senior Colonel PU Lin, the Chinese Defence Attaché, also spoke during the ceremony, praising the decade-long collaboration between the two nations. “This partnership has been built on more than just medicine,” he stated. “It’s about friendship, mutual trust, and working hand in hand for the well-being of both our people.” He thanked the 7th CMMEG for their role in strengthening ties between the two nations and affirmed China’s commitment to continued support in the future.
Colonel Dr. Stephen Sevalie, Commander of Sierra Leone’s Defence Medical Services, concluded the remarks by highlighting the tremendous impact the 7th CMMEG had on Sierra Leone’s healthcare system. He recalled their invaluable assistance during the Mpox outbreak, which was quickly contained due to the team’s quick response.
“You didn’t just treat diseases—you helped build a foundation for a healthier future,” he said. His words of thanks and admiration were a reflection of the respect and appreciation the medical and military communities held for the Chinese team.
As the ceremony wrapped up, the outgoing team was presented with certificates and medals in recognition of their service, while the incoming 8th CMMEG was warmly welcomed. The exchange of gifts symbolized not just the end of one chapter but the continuation of an enduring partnership between Sierra Leone and China.
As the 7th CMMEG returned to China, their legacy remained in Sierra Leone—a legacy of healing, friendship, and the shared goal of bettering the lives of the people. The 8th CMMEG, now in place, was ready to carry forward the mission of service and care, continuing the vital work that has brought both nations closer together over the years.
