An aspirant for the chairmanship of the All People’s Congress (APC), Alimamy Petito Koroma, has expressed confidence that the party can defeat the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) in future elections, provided it strengthens internal unity and cohesion.

Speaking during an interview on Liberty Online TV, Koroma urged party members to reflect on what is required to secure electoral victory.

“What do we have for that, and what do we need for that?” he asked, emphasizing that reconciliation and unity within the party are critical.

He said members with grievances should be encouraged to set aside their differences in the interest of building a stronger APC.

“We need to come together and unite the party so we can have internal cohesion,” he stated, adding that fairness and transparency among party leaders are necessary to prevent divisions that have previously weakened the party.

Koroma acknowledged that the APC continues to face internal challenges, which he said must be addressed decisively.

He further noted that he had received complaints from some party chairmen regarding alleged irregularities during lower-level internal elections, which he said he condemns. According to him, building a cohesive team requires consistently upholding fairness and due process.

Addressing concerns about influence within the party, Koroma said it is natural for long-serving members to retain influence. Drawing from personal experience, he said that although he left the Council of Churches in Sierra Leone more than 20 years ago, he still maintains influence within the institution.

However, he disagreed with suggestions that any former leader should determine who becomes the party’s next leader.

“It is not strange for someone who has served the party as chairman and leader for 20 years to have influence,” he said, “but to say he is to determine who will be the next leader  I don’t agree with that.”
