The Advocacy for Youth Mental Health Empowerment (AYMHE) has collaborated with the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) to combat drug abuse in the East End community.

The collaborative engagement took place on Tuesday at the office of ACP Adama Ngobeh, the Director of Gender and Community Affairs, located on George Street in Freetown.

According to reports from the engagement, the partnership aimed to raise awareness about the serious impact of drug abuse among the youth.

During the meeting, Esther Sesay, Project Consultant for AYMHE, outlined the organization’s mission to work alongside the police to inform the community about the dangers of drug use.

ACP Ngobeh expressed her support for the initiative. She highlighted the need for teamwork between AYMHE and the police, noting her experience as a Local Unit Commander in East End, where she aimed to dispel negative perceptions of the area.

She encouraged AYMHE to draft a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for review by the Inspector General of Police, to ensure the initiative receives proper guidance. Ngobeh also requested that AYMHE provide advance notice about the dates and locations of their planned community activities.

Superintendent George Momoh, the Local Unit Commander for East End Police, praised the collaborative effort and mentioned that AYMHE had already consulted him about the issue. He recommended that AYMHE connect with the Community Relations Department (CRD), which focuses on enhancing relationships between the police and the community.

The meeting reportedly concluded with input from the Head of the CRD at Police Headquarters and ended with a group photo, signaling a hopeful beginning for this important partnership.
