The bike rider involved in the tragic accident that led to the death of popular Sierra Leonean musician Steady Bongo has come forward to share his account of the incident.
Abubakarr Koroma, the rider, provided details about the events leading up to the fatal crash.
Koroma explained that he became acquainted with Steady Bongo through a mutual friend named Commander and had been accompanying the musician during his performances.
On the fateful day in Bandajuma town, Commander informed him of Steady Bongo’s arrival but noted that the artist was tired and needed rest before visiting a friend named Silasi.
Later that evening, around 6-7 PM, Koroma, Steady Bongo, and Commander set out on the motorcycle to visit Silasi. After spending time at the friend’s residence, they began their journey back late at night. During their return, tragedy struck.
Koroma recounted encountering a stationary truck on the road, which had no warning signs to indicate that it had broken down. While attempting to maneuver around the truck, another vehicle with bright lights approached from the opposite direction, momentarily blinding them. Commander shouted, “Look out, a car!” In the confusion, Steady Bongo reportedly jumped off the bike. Koroma, trying to regain control, collided directly with the stationary truck.
He described the harrowing aftermath, saying all three of them were left lying on the ground, injured and helpless. According to Koroma, the first vehicle to arrive at the scene transported Steady Bongo to the hospital, leaving him and Commander on the road until another vehicle later rescued ththem.
