In a decisive move to tackle the escalating issue of drug abuse, particularly the use of Kush, Paramount Chief Charles B. Caulker of Bumpeh Chiefdom in Moyamba District has taken a bold step by convening a town hall meeting with traditional leaders, women, and youths.
Addressing the gathering in his inaugural speech, Chief Caulker highlighted the pressing security threat that drug abuse, specifically Kush, poses to the chiefdom and its surroundings. He emphasized that the rampant use of Kush not only endangers the lives of the people but also contributes to a surge in criminal activities.
Chief Caulker pointed out that the consequences of drug abuse extend beyond internal conflicts among users. It has led to an increase in crimes such as theft and sexual harassment, negatively impacting young boys and girls under the age of twelve. He described drug abuse as a ticking time bomb that, if not addressed promptly, could deplete the active manpower crucial for the chiefdom’s economic development.
The paramount chief revealed ongoing efforts to combat drug abuse, including collaboration with the police, engagement with drug dealers and users, and the successful seizure of substantial quantities of Kush. These confiscated substances have been handed over to the police for further investigation.
Furthermore, Chief Caulker outlined plans for rehabilitation initiatives, indicating that, with support from stakeholders and mining companies in the chiefdom, they have established programs to create employment opportunities for identified drug users. He shared his commitment by employing some individuals on his farm and coordinating with mining companies to offer employment to those genuinely willing to quit drug intake.
The paramount chief concluded by urging continued support from the community, traditional leaders, and external partners in their collective effort to eradicate drug abuse and foster a safer and more prosperous Bumpeh Chiefdom.
