The dead body of a newly born child has been discovered in a nearby bush in a village in Eastern Sierra Leone, a police report say.

According to the report, Sylvanus Kanje, the town chief of Duadu village, Tankoro chiefdom, reported to the Kimbadu Police Station in Kono District that they discovered the remains of the newly born child in a nearby bush.

“The town chief of Duadu village, Tankoro chiefdom, Sylvanus Kanje reported to the Police at Kimbadu Police station that on Tuesday 3rd January 2023, around 14:30 hours, they discovered the remains of a newly born child in a nearby bush at Duadu village,” the Police report reads in part.

Upon receiving the information, a team of detectives including Detective Sgt 11322 Conteh MM, the Scene of Crime Officer, the Police report says, visited the scene and took photographs of the corpse.

The remains of the nameless child, the police said, were later conveyed to the Koidu Government hospital mortuary for postmortem examination. Police didn’t mention the course of the death in their report.

But during the investigation, Police say they have arrested a twenty years old woman suspected to be the mother of the child. A medical result, the report from the Police says shows the woman is a lactating mother but hasn’t presented a child either to the police or local authority.

“During the course, one 20-year-old Christiana Kellie was arrested on suspicion and was taken to the Koidu Government hospital for examination. The result shows that she is a new lactating mother but has not presented any child to the police,” the Police report stated.

The woman, the Police report says is in custody helping in the investigation.
