Four people were reportedly killed and three others seriously injured after a mud embankment collapsed at a mining site in Kumao Town, Nimikoro Chiefdom, Kono District, police have confirmed.
The incident occurred on Thursday, December 18, 2025, at the Boundary Gold Mining Site in the Kumao community.
According to police sources, seven miners were working at the site when a mudslide suddenly collapsed on them, trapping all seven beneath the embankment.

The information was reported to the Operations team during an intensive patrol within the Motema Division by Inspector Mohamed Joe Kanu, Officer Commanding of the Kumao Police Post.
Following the report, the Local Unit Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police Mohamed Turay, together with the Support Officer, Superintendent Solomon Koroma, and other members of the Operations team, immediately visited the scene.

Police said a search and rescue operation was promptly ordered and carried out. Four miners were recovered dead, while three others were rescued alive and rushed to the Koidu Government Hospital for urgent medical treatment. The bodies of the deceased were also conveyed to the same hospital for preservation and preliminary postmortem examination.
The deceased were identified as Abdul Bangura, Fatmata Bangura, Admansay Thullah, and Sampa Kargbo, all residents of Kumao Town. The injured survivors were named as Abdul Koroma, Abass Fullah, and Hawa Fullah, who are currently receiving treatment at the hospital.

Police further identified the owner of the mining site by the alias “Recent.” The Criminal Investigations Department at the divisional level has launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident and to establish the cause of death, police sources said.
