Sierra Leone’s Anti-Corruption Commissioner, Francis Ben Kaifala received the “Outstanding Achiever of the Year” award at the National Heroes Awards hosted by Heroes Media Group.

The event, held at the Bintumani Conference Centre in Aberdeen, honoured individuals who have made significant contributions to national development in Sierra Leone.

Commissioner Kaifala was recognised for his strong efforts in fighting corruption and promoting transparency and accountability in public service. The award citation praised his leadership for restoring integrity in governance and inspiring a culture of honesty across Sierra Leone.

Corruption remains a significant challenge in Sierra Leone and many other African nations. In 2018, President Julius Maada Bio appointed Kaifala to lead the fight against corruption. Since then, Kaifala has implemented rigorous measures aimed at combating graft and promoting transparency within the government.

However, mismanagement of public funds, enforcement issues and bribery remain high in some public institutions.

In 2024, Transparency International ranked the country 114th out of 180 countries in their Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), with a score of 33 out of 100. This places the country at the Sub-Saharan African average, highlighting persistent challenges in combating public sector corruption.
