The Mayor of Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr has confirmed that all debris from the February 8 fire incident on ECOWAS Street has now been fully cleared, following days of intensive cleanup efforts by the Freetown City Council (FCC).

In a statement posted on her official Facebook page, the Mayor disclosed that the fire disaster that occurred on Sunday, 8th February, destroyed three buildings on ECOWAS Street. Following the incident, residents reportedly moved debris from the damaged structures onto the main street, creating a significant and unplanned obstruction.

According to the Mayor, the Freetown City Council commenced clearing operations the very next day. However, the cleanup exercise was marred by tragedy when one of the Council’s trucks was involved in a fatal accident with a passerby at the scene. The FCC truck driver was subsequently detained by the Sierra Leone Police for several days to assist with investigations.

Despite the unfortunate incident, FCC sanitation workers continued to manage the heavy debris buildup on ECOWAS Street when carrying out additional work after completing their regular daily duties.

The Mayor expressed satisfaction that, following a final coordinated effort, the last of the fire debris was cleared from the street last night, restoring normalcy to the area.

She acknowledged the resilience and dedication of the sanitation workers who ensured the street was fully cleared despite the challenges encountered during the operation.
