The European Union Delegation in Sierra Leone, in partnership with International IDEA Africa & West Asia and BBC Media Action Sierra Leone, joined civil society organizations (CSOs) in commemorating International Human Rights Day.
The gathering brought together diverse voices from across the country to celebrate achievements in human rights advocacy and reflect on the challenges that continue to shape Sierra Leone’s civic landscape.
The event provided an important space for CSOs and local partners to share experiences, highlight their contributions to the promotion and protection of fundamental rights, and discuss strategies for strengthening democratic values.
Participants emphasized the crucial role of grassroots organizations in defending civic freedoms and advancing inclusive governance.
Ambassador Jacek Jankowski reaffirmed the European Union’s unwavering support for human rights defenders in Sierra Leone. He assured participants of the EU’s continued commitment to safeguarding civic space, promoting democratic principles, and backing the vital work of civil society organizations.
“The European Union stands firmly with those who dedicate their lives to protecting human rights. Together, we can ensure that civic space remains open, vibrant, and resilient,” Ambassador Jankowski stated.
The collaboration with International IDEA and BBC Media Action underscored the importance of partnerships in advancing human rights. By combining international expertise with local knowledge, the initiative highlighted how collective action can strengthen democratic institutions and empower communities to uphold their rights.
