The Chief Executive Officer of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, Dr. Sania Nishtar, has commended President Julius Maada Bio for his global leadership in championing immunization and vaccine equity, describing Sierra Leone as a regional leader in routine immunization delivery.
Dr. Nishtar made the remarks during a high-level meeting with President Bio on the sidelines of the World Governments Summit 2026 in Dubai. She highlighted the President’s instrumental role during Gavi’s replenishment efforts, particularly at last year’s Brussels Summit, where the alliance mobilized US$10 billion to support immunization programs worldwide.
“Your country is a regional leader in immunization. We owe you gratitude for all that you have done for Gavi. Thank you for your partnership,” Dr. Nishtar said.
In response, President Bio thanked Dr. Nishtar and the Gavi Board for their enduring support, noting that the partnership has enabled sustained improvements in routine immunization coverage, the introduction of new vaccines, investments in health infrastructure, and robust responses to public health emergencies, including COVID-19 and Mpox.
“As you are aware, Sierra Leone has maintained over 90 percent coverage for the DTP3 vaccine, a critical indicator of health system performance in our region,” the President said.
He also shared plans for a national “300 Days of Activism” initiative focused on maternal, newborn, and child survival, aimed at strengthening health outcomes and reducing preventable deaths.
The engagement reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s strong partnership with Gavi and underscored the country’s growing influence in global health advocacy and commitment to equitable vaccine access.
