After massive fire outbreak plundered female hostels at the University of Makeni, the Gilo Education and Economic Development (GEED) foundation on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, donated food and non-food items to the victims.
While presenting the donation, the Executive Director of GEED foundation, Asilia Jartue – Gilpin, told the victims that the foundation was there not only to provide material support but also to stand with them in this challenging period.
“We are not just here to provide these basic items, we are also here to reassure you that you are not alone and that in moments like these, you have to be steadfast and remain strong as what lies ahead of you is far greater than what you may have lost in that unfortunate fire, ” GEED’s Executive Director, Asilia Jartue – Gilpin, said.
Rokel Commercial Bank recently supported the affected victims with food and essential items.
Fire outbreak engulfed the University of Makeni female hostels on Monday, April 15, 2024, and devoured property. There were no reports of any injuries.
According to Shebora Samba Kamara, the University’s Public Relations Officer, there are no confirmed reports on the actual cause of the fire outbreak but there are circulating speculations saying the incident was caused by faulty electrical appliances and electric burn.
“We do not know what actually caused the fire outbreak, but there are speculations saying that probably an electrical appliance got burnt that led to the fire outbreak,” Shebora Samba Kamara, said.
Kamara confirmed to us that the fire victims have been relocated to the new hostels at Yoni for temporary accommodation.
