Popular reality TV star Hawa Madiana Hunt, who was recently released from prison, joined forces with the Christian Lawyers Centre (LEGAL LINK) to mark International Women’s Day by visiting the Female Correctional Centre in Freetown.

During the visit, they provided both motivational talks and essential contributions to the detained women.

The ceremony, held within the prison, was a lifeline for the female inmates, who received basic necessities such as toiletries, sanitary pads, rice, cooking oil, and water. LEGAL LINK’s visit not only offered practical aid but also aimed to bring hope to those in difficult circumstances.

Barrister Rashid Dumbuya of LEGAL LINK commended the dedication of the staff at the correctional center while addressing the facility’s growing challenges. The number of female inmates has increased significantly, from 50 to 90 in just a few months, largely due to women unable to meet bail conditions. This overcrowding has placed a strain on the prison’s resources.

As part of the celebration, Hunt shared an inspirational message with the prisoners, drawing from her personal experience and recalling the sense of freedom she felt during her own trial. She also announced plans to build a state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility in Sierra Leone.

LEGAL LINK reiterated its commitment to advocating for the rights of female inmates, including providing legal support for issues such as delayed trials, unlawful incarceration, and access to justice.

Legal interns Daphne and Dorcas also spoke, offering words of forgiveness, remorse, and hope for the future. The event concluded with a prayer session and the distribution of donations to the detainees.
