What began as a disagreement over land between Kamaketay and Fodaysoria villages in Biriwa Chiefdom, Karene District, quickly escalated into violence, with over 15 homes destroyed and many families left homeless.
The trouble started when Kamaketay began construction on a building foundation, which angered Fodaysoria residents. They claimed the land belonged to them and insisted no buildings should be built without their permission.
The tension soon boiled over. Fodaysoria residents reportedly destroyed a makeshift structure and set three thatched mud houses on fire in Kamaketay. In retaliation, Kamaketay residents launched a counterattack the next morning, burning down 15 homes in Fodaysoria village around 3am.
Thankfully, there were no injuries or deaths, but the damage was extensive. Security forces and government officials moved in quickly to prevent the situation from worsening, bringing a temporary halt to the violence.
Locals remain divided over the land’s ownership. Kamaketay residents point to land pegs and nearly completed construction as evidence that the land is rightfully theirs. But Fodaysoria insists the land belongs to them and no construction should have taken place.
Though calm has returned for now, the situation remains tense as both communities await a resolution.
This must be carefully investigated and peacefully resolved for both parties are brothers.
