The Institute for Law, Research, and Justice (ILRAJ) in partnership with Wivo Legal Tech 4 Africa, on Saturday hosted a practical skills lab on “AI Tools for Legal Research,” attracting legal professionals from across Freetown.

The event, held at the Africell American Corner, introduced participants to the C.R.E.A.T.E. model for effective prompt engineering and featured interactive breakout sessions designed to demonstrate practical applications of artificial intelligence in legal research.

During the two-hour session, attendees tested and compared outputs from AI models such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Copilot, alongside specialized legal tools including Lexis+ AI and NotebookLM.

Discussions focused on the strengths, limitations, and ethical considerations of these technologies, with an emphasis on how they can support legal drafting, research, and client communication.

Participants described the training as “eye-opening” and “essential for the modern lawyer,” with calls for similar sessions to be extended to law students and members of the judiciary.

ILRAJ noted that the workshop aligns with its mission to strengthen Sierra Leone’s legal profession through innovation. “This training reflects our commitment to equipping legal professionals with tools to adapt to the digital era,” the Institute stated.

The organization said it plans to build on the discussions by hosting further sessions on the role of AI in law.
