The Kono District Security Coordinator, Bartholomew Membui of the Office of National Security (ONS), has launched an initiative to elevate security awareness at the chiefdom level within Kono District.

According to him, he aimed to provide local communities with a comprehensive understanding of national security dynamics. This initiative marks the first time such a direct engagement has been undertaken, presenting a unique opportunity for residents to voice their concerns and enhance their knowledge about security measures.

The chiefdom security tour began in Mafindor Chiefdom on Thursday, June 13th, 2024. The primary focus of this initial visit was to address pressing security issues related to health, education, and border management. During the visit, Mr. Membui and his team engaged in fruitful discussions with local authorities, including the Paramount Chief, PC Alie Musa. The insights and concerns raised by the community were documented with the promise of being presented to the District Security Committee for further action, ensuring that local voices contribute to broader security strategies.

On June 15th, 2024, the security awareness campaign continued with a comprehensive engagement in Soa Chiefdom, specifically in the Sawa-Fiama Section. Partnering with Mr. Abu Kanawa, the ONS Focal Person of Soa Chiefdom, the team focused on early warning and response systems, security alertness, and incident reporting mechanisms. The main objective was to empower residents with the knowledge and tools needed to actively participate in maintaining their community’s security. This engagement highlighted the critical role of community involvement in identifying and addressing potential threats.

Throughout the engagements, the ONS team provided detailed explanations of their mandate and functions, emphasizing the importance of early warning and localized threat response. The presentations covered a broad spectrum of security concerns, including public order, organized crime, economic security, health threats, and environmental issues.

The residents of Soa Chiefdom were encouraged to report suspicious activities to local authorities and the Local Policing Partnership Board. The warm reception from PC Emmanuel Tamba Torche Foryoh IV and the active participation of community leaders underscored the initiative’s success. Looking ahead, Mr. Membui has expressed his commitment to extending this security awareness tour to all 14 chiefdoms within Kono District, highlighting the ONS’s dedication to safeguarding the region’s peace and security.
