A large plot of land along Council Road in York Road Community, Waterloo has been turned into an open dumping site.
But despite its current state, a heated battle over ownership is still ongoing.
According to a report by Africa 24 Communications Newspaper, the land, measuring more than two hectares and located near Haekam School off Paw-Paw Road, is at the center of a dispute between at least two individuals who both claim they are the rightful owner.
Ibrahim, who serves as caretaker on the site, said he was placed there by his employer, a man based in Freetown who also reportedly owns properties in Grafton and other parts of Waterloo. The employer had warned his caretaker to leave the land with his family, fearing they could be caught up in confrontations with rival claimants or even face forced eviction by police.
Last year, a bulldozer working on the land was ordered to stop after police and military personnel stormed the area. The arrival of two truckloads of armed officers caused panic among residents nearby, many of whom feared a possible clash.
Since then, the land has remained untouched and is now gradually being used as a garbage dump. Unfinished structures stand empty on the property while household and street waste continues to pile up.
Despite its abandoned state and growing misuse, the dispute over ownership has not been resolved. The caretaker, who still lives on the property, said he would leave if he had the money to rent elsewhere, but for now he stays in one of the incomplete buildings, uncertain of what will happen next.
The situation has raised concern in the community as the site’s condition worsens and no clear resolution appears to be in sight.
