The Lawyers’ Society has called on the government to carry out a full audit of the national electricity system following a series of fire incidents in Bo, Makeni, Waterloo, and Freetown in recent months.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, the Society said many people believe the fires may be linked to ongoing problems with electricity supply. They are asking for investigations to identify any faults in the system that could be leading to these incidents.
The Society also said firefighters need better working conditions and equipment. They stated that this would help emergency teams respond more effectively to fires and reduce the risk to people and property.
The statement referred to Section 5(2)(b) of the 1991 Constitution, which says the state must protect the security, peace, and welfare of the people. It also mentioned Section 15(a), which guarantees the right to life and livelihood.
