In a remarkable gesture of community development, former Leone Stars player Abdulraham Sesay, popularly known as DoDos, has unveiled a newly reconstructed street bearing his name in the Brima Lane area of eastern Freetown.
The initiative, which transformed the formerly dilapidated Savage Street into ‘Sesay Street,’ was made possible through Sesay’s personal efforts and resources, with the approval of the Freetown City Council.
The unveiling ceremony was attended by representatives from the Freetown City Council, community stakeholders, and local residents, who gathered to celebrate this significant development.
In his remarks, Community Chief Kapeh praised Sesay’s contribution, emphasizing its importance in complementing the work of the City Council. “In Islam, constructing a road is one of the most commendable acts because it benefits everyone. Sesay’s effort is laudable, and I urge the City Council to improve their oversight in maintaining roads,” Chief Kapeh stated.
Chief Imam of the community highlighted the previous poor condition of the street, which had made it difficult for residents to pass through. He commended Sesay for single-handedly reconstructing the road, enabling residents to move comfortably, especially to attend prayers.
Another elder in the community acknowledged the financial challenges involved in such a project, noting the high costs of materials like sand, stone, and cement. He applauded Sesay’s initiative, stressing the importance of individual efforts in community development rather than waiting solely on the government.
The chairlady of the community expressed her gratitude to Sesay, pointing out that his action would immortalize his family’s name. She also made donations to the Chief Imam and the Community Chief on behalf of Sesay, emphasizing that while many have the means, not all have the heart to give back in this manner.
A representative from the City Council, Abdul Bangura, lauded Sesay’s efforts, thanking him for taking the initiative to not only improve the road but also to name it, thus providing an identity to a previously nameless street.
In his address, Abdulraham Sesay thanked the community members for their support and explained that the project was inspired by a desire to honor his father’s legacy. He urged the community to take responsibility for maintaining the road, ensuring its longevity through collective effort and care.
The ceremony concluded with the unveiling of the sign that officially renamed the street ‘Sesay Street,’ marking a new chapter for the community and leaving a lasting legacy for Abdulraham Sesay and his family.
