The Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the National Association of Certified Tour Guides-Sierra Leone, marked World Tour Guides Day with an educational nature hike to Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Regent Village, outside Freetown.
The event highlighted the country’s commitment to ecotourism, conservation, and cultural preservation.
With this year’s theme “Tourist Guides as Ambassadors”, the World Tour Guides Day, celebrated annually in over 70 countries, recognises tour guides as ambassadors who shape tourists’ experiences.
Association President Peter Momoh Bassie acknowledged the valuable support from the Ministry during the three-day celebration focused on environmental conservation.
The event featured public discussions on ecotourism, a symposium held at the Peace and Cultural Monument, and a nature hike at Tacugama. These activities were designed to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our environment.
Before the hike, Mohamed Jalloh, Director of Tourism, reaffirmed the government’s dedication to protecting Tacugama and its forest reserve, aligning with President Julius Maada Bio’s vision for ecotourism in 2025. He commended tour guides for their role in enhancing visitors’ experiences and navigating hard-to-reach terrains.
The event reinforced the Ministry’s commitment to combating environmental destruction and preserving Sierra Leone’s natural heritage.
