During the State Opening of the Third Session of the Sixth Parliament of the Second Republic of Sierra Leone on Thursday, 7 August 2025, tension briefly eclipsed the ceremonial atmosphere when some Members of Parliament were heard chanting “You coco roast oh” as First Lady Fatima Maada Bio entered the chamber and made her way to her seat.

The chant, which drew murmurs from the well and momentarily shifted attention from the proceedings, is widely believed by some observers to be linked to the recent Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) internal election, where reports suggest the candidate allegedly supported by the First Lady lost.

Some were clearly heard saying, “ D Mami e coco burn.”A playful or sarcastic jab implying something has gone wrong for the person or Someone’s plans have failed

The incident adds to a growing list of moments involving the First Lady during the same session that have sparked public debate.

Eyewitnesses noted that she remained seated during the entrance of President Julius Maada Bio and Vice President Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, despite an announcement instructing everyone to stand.

In another instance, she was seen wearing an earphone while the President delivered his keynote address to Parliamentan act many interpreted as a signal that all is not well within the First Family.

The series of events has fuelled speculation and intensified discussions about both parliamentary decorum and the political climate within the ruling party.
