The Sierra Leone Police (Motema Division) has formally charged a woman, Doris Bangura, with child cruelty following an alleged incident in Njagbwema Town, Nimikoro Chiefdom.
The accused, a resident of Njagbwema Town, was charged in connection with an incident said to have occurred on 14 February 2026.
According to police reports filed by Zainab Mattia and Tamba, both residents of the community, the suspect was arrested for allegedly setting fire to the hand of her seven-year-old niece.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the child sustained injuries as a result of the alleged act.
During questioning, the suspect reportedly expressed remorse, claiming she acted out of frustration over the child’s alleged repeated theft of small sums of money.
Doris Bangura has been remanded in custody pending her court appearance.
The Sierra Leone Police have reiterated that frustration or behavioral concerns do not constitute legal justification for physical abuse or torture.
