The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has expanded its Smart City Project to the North-East Region with the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at strategic locations across Makeni.
The initiative, first introduced in 2014, has been fast-tracked under the leadership of Inspector General of Police (IGP) William Fayia Sellu, who has prioritized modern policing reforms since assuming office. Similar installations have already been completed in the Western Area and in Bo, Southern Region.
According to the SLP, the CCTV system is designed to enhance public safety, deter crime, and support proactive policing through advanced surveillance technology. The newly installed cameras are fitted with inbuilt solar panels, high-capacity storage, and dual functions to capture both still images and video recordings.

The Smart City Project is a central part of IGP Sellu’s broader reform agenda to transform the Sierra Leone Police from a “Force” into a “Service.” Other reform measures currently underway include the review of the outdated Police Act of 1964, strengthening of the Complaints, Discipline and Internal Investigations Department, and the rollout of specialized training programmes to prepare officers for emerging global and domestic security challenges.
Plans are already in motion to extend the CCTV initiative to Kenema in the Eastern Region and Port Loko in the North-West Region, making surveillance technology a nationwide policing tool.

Residents of Makeni have welcomed the development, describing the installation of CCTV cameras as a timely intervention that will boost confidence in community safety and provide better protection for both lives and property.
