The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) in the Port Loko Division have intensified their crackdown on illegal drug activities with the arrest of three male suspects for the alleged unlawful possession of substances suspected to be kush.

The arrests were made on 15 January 2026 during a routine patrol operation carried out on the basis of credible and actionable intelligence.

The operation was led by the Division’s Operations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ahmed Sahid Bangura, alongside a team of police personnel deployed to strategic locations across Port Loko Township. The coordinated patrol forms part of ongoing police efforts to curb the growing threat of drug abuse and trafficking, particularly among young people.

The suspects have been identified as Sheku Bangura of Falaba Road, Mohamed Deen Kamara of 43 New London, off Kambia Road, and Ibrahim Abu Conteh of Kamara Street. They were apprehended at Kamara Street, an area police describe as a location of interest following intelligence reports suggesting suspected drug-related activities.

Upon search and inspection, officers recovered one hundred and twenty-four (124) wraps of substances believed to be kush, a highly dangerous and illegal drug that has become a major public concern due to its devastating effects on users and communities.

The suspects are currently in police custody at the Port Loko Police Station, where they are assisting with ongoing investigations. Police sources say further inquiries are underway to determine the origin of the substances, identify possible networks involved, and establish whether additional arrests may follow.

Speaking on the development, the Sierra Leone Police reiterated their firm commitment to combating drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking across the country. The police described the fight against kush as a national responsibility, stressing that the drug poses serious risks to public health, security, and social stability.

The SLP also called on parents, community leaders, youth groups, and the general public to support the fight against drug abuse by educating young people on its dangers and providing timely and useful information to law enforcement authorities.

Residents of Port Loko have welcomed the police action, describing it as a positive step toward restoring safety and protecting young people from the harmful effects of drugs. Many have called for sustained operations and stronger community–police collaboration to ensure drug dealers are identified and brought to justice.

As investigations continue, the Sierra Leone Police have assured the public of their continued vigilance and determination to keep communities safe from drug-related crimes.
