The ongoing political conflict within the Port Loko District Motor Drivers Union has taken a new turn following a resolution by the National Executive of the Union.
After extensive mediation efforts, it has been decided that the current chairman, Kandeh Burreh Koroma, will remain in his position, despite calls for his removal from some members within the union.
The decision came after a mediation session held in Freetown on October 15, 2024, involving both factions of the union. The national president of the Union, Alpha Bah, led the discussions in an attempt to resolve the leadership dispute.
Former chairman and opposition leader Alusine Summa Turay, who had been advocating for a leadership change, confirmed the outcome.
He stated, “We went to Freetown to push for a change in the drivers union leadership, but the president, after consultations, decided to maintain the status quo and offered advice.”
The ruling was accompanied by a strong advisory to Chairman Koroma to focus on maintaining peace and unity within the union moving forward. The decision follows a period of intense political tension between Koroma and his predecessor, Turay, who had publicly protested for a change in leadership.
The conflict had drawn the attention of National President Alpha Bah and Resident Minister Umaru Bond Wurie, both of whom engaged the parties in an effort to de-escalate the situation.
While the leadership change sought by some has been deferred, the union now faces the challenge of moving forward with Koroma at the helm, under the watchful guidance of the national executive.
Both sides are being urged to work together to foster peace and stability within the organization, which has been at the center of political contention in recent months.
