In a decisive move to bolster security across the Southern Region, the Provincial Security Committee (PROSEC) South, led by Regional Police Commander South, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Brima Kanneh, conducted a comprehensive inspection tour of key checkpoints from Fallah to the Jendema Custom Complex on Thursday, October 24, 2024. The tour aimed at addressing rising incidents of drug smuggling and lawlessness along unmonitored bypass routes.

AIG Kanneh highlighted the strategic importance of security checkpoints in deterring crime, particularly amid growing concerns that traffickers are exploiting bypass roads. “We’re here to strengthen our collective commitment to community safety. These bypass routes have become avenues for traffickers, and we must respond with vigilance,” Kanneh said. He reiterated PROSEC South’s commitment to closing security gaps and disrupting criminal networks operating in the region.

Brigadier General M. Bangura of the 5th Brigade at Gondama Barracks expressed concerns that traffickers are increasingly sidestepping established checkpoints by using remote bypass roads. He stressed the need for stronger cooperation between military and police forces to effectively combat these security threats.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Alieu Karma, Regional Operations Commander South, called for heightened vigilance and proactive strategies from officers on the ground. “This tour is about more than boosting morale; it’s about ensuring operational readiness. We must dismantle the networks exploiting these routes,” Karma said, adding that patrols would be intensified to prevent illegal activities in the region.

Key personnel were recognized for their efforts during the inspection. Detective Police Constable Mohamed Patrick Ngobeh, who has been instrumental in multiple drug-related arrests, and RSLAF Military Police Corporal Kanu were commended for their exemplary work at Fallah Checkpoint.

Provincial Security Coordinator South, Samuel A.J. Bullie, and Ibrahim S.M. Kpaka, Acting Regional Coordinator South for the Sierra Leone Commission on Arms and Ammunition, both emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in tackling security threats. Their focus is on safeguarding communities and reinforcing lawful conduct across the Southern Region.

Customs Manager Mujiru I.I. Kallon, stationed at Jendema Custom Complex, praised recent successful operations in intercepting illegal substances and affirmed the customs team’s ongoing commitment to border security.

The tour concluded with a firm resolve among PROSEC South officials to ramp up security efforts along bypass routes. An upcoming strategic meeting in Potoru is expected to produce targeted solutions to combat drug trafficking and enhance the region’s security framework.
