Hon. Tawa Conteh, Deputy Speaker and Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), addressed journalists on October 29, 2024, regarding the committee’s ongoing oversight efforts in the management of government resources.

Speaking at a press conference held in the new Administrative Building conference room at Parliament, Conteh emphasized the urgent need for vehicles to facilitate the committee’s oversight functions, particularly in hard-to-reach communities where government project funds are allocated.

“One of our major challenges is the lack of mobility for vehicle movement to carry out our oversight duties effectively, especially in remote areas,” Conteh stated.

He underscored that adequate transportation is crucial for ensuring that the PAC can fulfill its mandate in monitoring and evaluating the implementation of government projects.

Conteh shared that the committee is transitioning to a more regular oversight schedule, moving from occasional overnight functions to monthly sessions.

This new approach will allow the PAC to closely examine provincial ministries, departments, agencies, and councils, with a focus on the western region of Sierra Leone in the coming months.

The PAC Chair also highlighted discussions held with relevant agencies and stakeholders regarding the planning and sponsorship of these oversight activities.

He assured the public that the committee is committed to addressing the persistent challenges in managing the country’s resources and is actively working on measures to improve accountability.

In addition to mobility issues, Conteh mentioned that the PAC is preparing to submit a comprehensive report detailing their findings, recommendations, and reviews, which will serve as a basis for action moving forward.

He noted the importance of familiarizing committee members with performance audit reports before the release of the 2023 Audit Service report.

The PAC is set to commence hearings on the 2023 Audit Service report in January 2025 after it has been tabled in Parliament. Conteh expressed optimism about the upcoming hearings, stating, “We will ensure that the hearings on the 2023 Audit Service reports proceed smoothly and lead to tangible progress.”

With these initiatives, the Public Accounts Committee aims to strengthen oversight functions and enhance transparency in the management of public resources in Sierra Leone.
