The Family Support Unit (FSU) at the Pujehun Police Division is facing critical logistical challenges that significantly hinder its ability to address the alarming rise in teenage pregnancies and various forms of abuse within the district.

Officers at the division have reported severe shortages of essential resources, including mobility options, stationery, and crucial electronic devices such as computers, printers, and cameras.

A police officer, who preferred to remain nameless, emphasized the difficulties posed by Pujehun’s challenging territory, particularly in riverine areas. These geographical obstacles often obstruct timely searches for suspects, leaving vulnerable young girls exposed to numerous threats.

The officer pointed out that the lack of transportation hinders swift responses to incidents, exacerbating risks faced by girls in the community.

In addition to mobility issues, the district is currently devoid of temporary shelter homes for victims of sexual abuse. As a result, officers often find themselves compelled to return victims to their relatives while investigations are ongoing.

This practice not only jeopardizes the integrity of ongoing cases but also places victims in potentially unsafe situations.

The officer underscored the urgent need for humanitarian organizations to assist in establishing temporary shelters for these at-risk children. Observations reveal that approximately 60% of inmates at the Pujehun Correctional Center are imprisoned for crimes such as sexual penetration, domestic violence, or other abuses against women and girls.

While law enforcement is making commendable efforts to tackle these issues, the lack of necessary logistical support severely restricts their ability to effect real change.

The officer commended the Inspector General of Police for his proactive approach in ensuring that cases submitted to the state counsel are addressed quickly.

However, they reiterated the pressing need for additional logistical support, encouraging humanitarian organizations to step in. “We are all fighting for a common goal, and if we can achieve that, the sky will be the limit,” they stated.

As the Pujehun Family Support Unit continues to confront these significant challenges, the community is left to deal with the repercussions of inadequate support for both law enforcement and vulnerable populations.

The call for immediate action is clear, as stakeholders must prioritize the safety and well-being of those at risk in Pujehun District. The time for assistance is now, as the community looks to bolster its defenses against rising abuse and support its most vulnerable members.
