A devastating fire has claimed the lives of five people, including the wife and children of Regent Chief Foday Conteh, in the Bombali Shebora Chiefdom, Bombali District.

The tragedy occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at the Chief’s residence in the Grace Land area of Makeni.

Local sources confirmed that the inferno completely destroyed the property, trapping the family inside. The victims have been identified as the Chief’s wife, Isatu, and their four children. Their remains have been conveyed to the Makeni Regional Hospital mortuary.

Regent Chief Foday Conteh, who was also in the house at the time of the blaze, survived but sustained severe, life-threatening burns. He was initially admitted to the Government Hospital on Makama Road in Makeni for stabilization. Reports indicate he has since been rushed to the Emergency Hospital in Freetown due to the critical nature of his injuries.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established.

Compounding the tragedy, witnesses report that local firefighters were unable to intervene. The fire service reportedly failed to deploy to the scene because their fire engine was broken down and non-operational.
