On Tuesday, August 26, 2025, Sierra Leone will start constructing its first canopy walkway at the Tacugama Sanctuary, Regent, Freetown.

The initiative is led by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, the National Tourist Board, and the Tacugama Sanctuary.
The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 2:30 PM.

This flagship eco-tourism project is designed to position Sierra Leone as a sustainable tourism destination and promoting conservation and community development.

According to the project partners, the walkway will provide visitors with a unique view of the rainforest canopy, while also supporting biodiversity protection efforts and creating green jobs.

The Canopy Walkway will serve as an additional attraction within the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, which is already a major conservation site and eco-tourism hub.

Organizers hope the project will draw more visitors, generate local income, and raise awareness about wildlife and environmental protection.

The project also aligns with Sierra Leone’s national development goals, which emphasize sustainable economic growth, environmental stewardship, and inclusive community involvement.

Tuesday’s groundbreaking marks the start of construction, with further details on the walkway’s length, design, and completion timeline expected to be announced in the coming months.

Officials have encouraged the public and stakeholders to attend the event and support what they call a step toward conservation and innovation in Sierra Leone.
