The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) Eastern Region has convened a preparatory meeting in anticipation of an upcoming friendly football match, aimed at strengthening unity, teamwork, and camaraderie among media practitioners in the region.
The meeting, held in Kenema, brought together journalists from across the Eastern Province to discuss logistics, team coordination, and strategies for the much-anticipated encounter. The friendly is part of SLAJ’s broader efforts to promote wellness, social cohesion, and collaboration within the media fraternity beyond the newsroom.
In his opening remarks, SLAJ Eastern Region Chairperson, Mr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai, emphasized the importance of such initiatives in fostering strong professional bonds among journalists. He noted that sports have long served as a unifying force, capable of breaking barriers and creating an environment of mutual respect and teamwork.
“This friendly match is not just about football,” Mr. Abdulai stated. “It’s about bringing our colleagues together in the spirit of unity, building relationships, and showcasing the positive energy of the media community. As journalists, we play a crucial role in informing the nation, and it’s equally important that we create spaces to support our own well-being.”
The meeting focused on key areas including team selection, match venue, and coordination with partners and sponsors. Participants also discussed the need to engage with local authorities, sporting organizations, and media houses to ensure wider participation and visibility for the event.
According to the organizing committee, the friendly is expected to draw participants from across the three major cities of the Eastern Region, Kenema, Kono, and Kailahun, with the aim of fostering regional unity among journalists and promoting a culture of teamwork and physical fitness.
“This is a moment for journalists to relax, connect, and enjoy the lighter side of our work,” said one committee member. “The football match will be a reminder that while we handle serious national issues daily, we also need moments that refresh our minds and strengthen our bonds.”
The SLAJ Eastern Region leadership also reaffirmed its commitment to expanding social and professional development activities for its members. Beyond the upcoming friendly, plans are underway for more inter-regional engagements, including workshops, public dialogues, and community outreach programs.
In closing, members expressed optimism that the friendly match would set the tone for continued collaboration and healthy competition within the SLAJ network. They also extended appreciation to partners and sponsors who have shown interest in supporting the event, calling on others to come onboard and make it a memorable occasion.
As preparations continue, excitement is building across the region, with many journalists eager to showcase their sporting skills and enjoy a day of fun, friendship, and fellowship under the SLAJ banner.
The date and venue of the match are expected to be announced in the coming days.
