A teacher from Basharia Islamic Primary School in Freetown has been arrested by police following allegations of sexual misconduct involving two pupils from Class Four.
The incident, which occurred at the school located at 1 Bass Street, Fourah Bay, was promptly reported to the authorities.
The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) confirmed the arrest in a press statement today, acknowledging the recent report and stating that the teacher in question has been suspended. The individual is currently in police custody as investigations continue.
According to the MBSSE, the two pupils involved have undergone examination and have been confirmed to be safe and are receiving appropriate protection. The Ministry assured the public that it is fully aware of the development and that investigations are ongoing, with the full outcome to be made public in due course.
The MBSSE reiterated its unwavering zero-tolerance stance on School-Related Gender-Based Violence (SRGBV), emphasizing that schools must be safe spaces free from fear, abuse, or exploitation. The Ministry stated that any violation of a child’s rights within an educational setting is unacceptable and will be dealt with to the full extent of the law.
The Ministry is collaborating closely with key national partners, including the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs, the Ministry of Social Welfare, the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, to ensure a holistic and survivor-centered response. Law enforcement agencies and school authorities remain actively involved in the ongoing process.
In response to the growing urgency of addressing SRGBV at all levels, the MBSSE highlighted its commitment to a national, multi-sectoral dialogue on SRGBV. This forum, supported by development partners like the World Bank, FCDO, the European Union, and Irish Aid, aims to bring together professionals and policymakers across education, justice, child protection, and community systems. These partners have been instrumental in advancing safeguarding mechanisms and will play a key role in shaping a coordinated national strategy rooted in prevention, protection, and accountability.
The MBSSE urged the public to remain calm and allow due process to unfold. The Ministry affirmed its commitment to full transparency while safeguarding the dignity and well-being of the children involved.
