Fish-selling women at Wan Pole, Lumley Beach, have received significant support from the Government of Sierra Leone following the unveiling of a new shelter to enhance their livelihood.
The facility, introduced by the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, aims to provide a safe and dignified working environment for women engaged in fish trading along the beach.
According to Dr. David Moinina Sengeh, this is to promote economic empowerment and social inclusion in the country.
“The people are our security. At Wan Pole, Lumley beach, the government has finally provided shelter for our fish selling women. That’s dignity! That’s radical inclusion. Thank you, Ministry of Tourism” Said Dr. Sengeh.
The Shelter provided is to help improve tourism infrastructure and at the same time benefiting communities near Freetown’s beaches. Some stakeholders were happy that the shelter is provided, calling it a realistic step toward acknowledging and empowering the informal sector, particularly women.
