Shafumu Smith, an unemployed youth, was sentenced to 18 months in prison by Magistrate Josephine Feimata Hinga at Pademba Road Court No. 5 in Freetown on charges of larceny. The sentencing followed Smith’s guilty plea for stealing two mobile phones valued at 3,100 Leones.

According to court details, the theft occurred on February 20, 2025, at Model New Road in the Western Area. Smith stole a Tecno Spark 2 phone and a gold manual phone, both belonging to Foday Janneh. The charge was brought under Section 2 of the Larceny Act of 1916.

During the hearing, the prosecution, led by Sergeant 9906 Umu Talloh, noted that Smith had no prior criminal record. Appearing without legal representation, Smith pleaded guilty when the charge was read and explained to him. He also appealed to the magistrate to temper justice with mercy.

Despite his plea for leniency and lack of previous convictions, Magistrate Hinga sentenced Smith to 18 months at the Male Correctional Facility in Freetown.
