Traders and residents in Makeni have expressed frustration and concern over a large, abandoned heap of garbage at the Makeni Central Market, describing the situation as both unsanitary and unacceptable.

The waste, reportedly piled up for over a week, has grown into what eyewitnesses describe as a “two-storey” mound, raising serious public health concerns in one of the city’s busiest commercial hubs. The market, a key centre for food sales and daily trade, attracts thousands of people whose livelihoods depend on a clean and safe environment.

Vendors say the presence of the garbage is affecting business, with many fearing contamination of food items and the potential spread of disease. “We are suffering,” one trader lamented. “This is where we sell what people eat, and now we are surrounded by waste.”

Critics have also pointed to the situation as evidence of the Makeni City Council’s failure to effectively manage sanitation within the city. Despite repeated calls for intervention, traders claim that no meaningful action has been taken to clear the waste.

Residents are now urging the council to act swiftly to address the crisis, warning that continued inaction could worsen health risks and further disrupt economic activity at the market.

The Makeni City Council has yet to issue an official response on the matter.
