The highly anticipated 15th edition of the EBK Trophy, Sierra Leone’s premier Christmas Day football tradition, is set to take place at the iconic Wusum Field in Makeni. Established in 2007 by Honourable Chernoh Maju Bah, popularly known as “Chericoco,” this annual tournament has become a symbol of unity, talent, and community spirit, drawing football enthusiasts, dignitaries, and families together from across the nation.
The tournament began modestly with fewer than six teams competing at the Makeni military barracks but has since evolved into a major national event. Teams from across Sierra Leone, including Makeni, Kabala, Magburaka, Lunsar, Port Loko, and Kambia, converge in Makeni to battle for glory in front of thousands of passionate fans.
This year’s EBK Trophy carries special significance, marking 15 years of a football legacy that has inspired generations. As always, Chericoco has taken the lead in sponsoring the tournament, continuing his longstanding tradition of providing trophies, medals, and prizes imported from the United Kingdom to ensure a high-quality competition.
Although former President Ernest Bai Koroma, the tournament’s namesake and longtime patron, will be absent this year due to commitments in Nigeria, his influence will still be felt. Known for his memorable appearances at the finals wearing his signature Arsenal jersey, Koroma’s image on the trophies and medals adds a personal and historic touch to the event.
The EBK Trophy’s reach extends beyond the Northern Region, drawing spectators from the North-Western and Western Areas. It is a gathering point for political figures, including former and current ministers, mayors, MPs, and councilors, as well as football administrators, SLFA officials, and representatives from Premier League and Division One clubs.
More than just a competition, the EBK Trophy has become a platform for nurturing young football talent, offering scouts and football administrators a chance to discover rising stars. The tournament serves as a reminder of Sierra Leone’s enduring love for football and its power to bring communities together.
As Christmas Day approaches, anticipation for this year’s EBK Trophy finale is at fever pitch. Fans, players, and dignitaries alike are gearing up for what promises to be another unforgettable chapter in the tournament’s rich history. For 15 years, the EBK Trophy has been more than just a football event—it is a celebration of tradition, unity, and the beautiful game in Sierra Leone.
