The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament has launched celebrations for its 25th anniversary, coinciding with the bloc’s 50th founding year, with a call for renewed dedication to regional unity and economic progress.
In her opening address, ECOWAS Parliament Speaker Hon. Hadja Memounatou Ibrahima urged member states to strengthen efforts toward building an integrated and prosperous West Africa.
“We must inclusively celebrate our victories alongside other ECOWAS institutions. This silver jubilee reminds us that integration is not an inevitable destiny but a daily choice we must cultivate and reinvent,” Ibrahima said.
She highlighted the parliament’s key achievements over the past 25 years, including fostering parliamentary cooperation, managing political crises, and advancing regional integration.
The anniversary coincides with the First Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Parliament in Abuja, where lawmakers are discussing critical political, security, and economic challenges facing the subregion.
Among attendees is Sierra Leone’s Opposition Leader, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, who reaffirmed his country’s commitment to regional cooperation and democratic governance under the ECOWAS framework.
The session brings together parliamentarians from across West Africa to deliberate on strategies for enhancing stability and development in the region.
