The Adaba Awoo Hunting Society, a cultural institution rooted in Sierra Leonean heritage, is celebrating its 45th anniversary with nearly a month-long series of events. Founded on June 1, 1979, in Freetown’s Magazine Community, the Society has grown from its humble beginnings to become a global symbol of cultural preservation and unity.

The celebration, set to run from December 18, 2024, to January 11, 2025, will feature performances and displays by various hunting societies, including the Brookland Hunting Society, Midlands 2 (Omi Eku) Hunting Society, and the Adaba/Front Line Hunting Society. Key locations such as Marshal Street, Magazine Cut, and Parade Field will host the events, culminating in a grand picnic on January 11, 2025.

The Society was born out of a meeting on June 1, 1979, at No. 1 Watch in Magazine Community. Originally named “Omo Keke-ray Togbay Awoo,” the group quickly established itself with the consecration of its Ogun Shrine on November 16, 1979, followed by its official inauguration, or Comojadeh, on January 1, 1980.

Despite setbacks, including the destruction of its temporary shrine by heavy rains in 1982, the Society secured permanent land in 1983, solidifying its home base. In 1984, it adopted its current name, symbolizing its growing cultural and societal influence.

The Society’s first major celebration took place in 1985, and since then, it has marked its anniversaries every five years. Over the decades, the Adaba Awoo Hunting Society has expanded globally, welcoming members worldwide while maintaining its roots in Sierra Leone. Its evolution into a leading cultural institution underscores its commitment to preserving Sierra Leonean traditions.

This year’s theme, “Kakaray-ti-Adaba” — meaning “it is a child that grows to be a full-grown man” — reflects the Society’s enduring legacy and its role in uniting people through shared heritage.

The anniversary events promise to showcase vibrant cultural displays, music, and traditional hunting society rituals. Organizers highlight the importance of these celebrations in promoting Sierra Leone’s rich cultural history and fostering community pride.

The grand finale, a picnic on January 11, 2025, will bring members, supporters, and well-wishers together to honor the Society’s achievements over the past 45 years.

The Adaba Awoo Hunting Society stands as a beacon of cultural resilience and unity for Sierra Leoneans at home and abroad. As the Society celebrates its milestone, it continues to inspire future generations to embrace and preserve their heritage.
