Sierra Leone’s opposition party, the Alliance Democratic Party (ADP) during their convention held on Sunday 26th March 2023, elected their Flagbearer and Chairman, Ibrahim Summa aka (Brima Togo) in absentia, as he is currently in the United States of America.
According to the elected Deputy Chairman of the party, Abdulrahman Kamara their elected Chairman and leader is presently in the USA for medical check-up and was therefore unavoidably absent but is expected back by the first week of April 2023.
He noted that this is the first time in the history of the party for more women and district and regional executive members to be elected in to 21 positions.
However, there was some misunderstanding in the hall over the Publicity Secretary position (PRO). Supporters were angry with the officials not not announcing their delegate’s names in the conference hall, while other delegates from the provinces believed that only one name for the PRO position was written on the list.
The Deputy Chairman explained that it was a typographical error done by the typist who subconsciously typed ‘Abdul Ramadan’ separately instead of ‘Abdulrahman’ out of the three members vying for that position.
He told this medium that the ADP constitution gives them the mandate after every three years to conduct a delegate convention despite the absence of their former leader, Kamarainba Mansaray who was jailed.
“We have shown sympathy to Kamarainba Mansaray when he was in prison, we visited him and even when he was at the CID for investigation. But for this convention we do not have the mandate to relay any message to him concerning the convention. We can only do that by informing delegate members and the public across the country,” he disclosed. “All we can do we have done the needful.
Since the party was founded we had never done a lower level elections” he said. Speaking in a telephone interview from the USA the Chairman and Leader, Ibrahim Summa aka (Brima Togo), said he has been elected as the Chairman in the country and he will be coming shortly to move on with the ADP.
