Presidential spokesman Alpha Kanu has defended President Julius Maada Bio’s international travels, insisting that the head of state remains fully engaged in national governance despite his frequent foreign commitments.

In an exclusive interview with Truth Media, Kanu said President Bio uses modern technology to stay in constant communication with his administration while abroad, enabling him to remain actively involved in decision-making and oversight.

He emphasized that the president’s leadership approach ensures he is “on top of the situation” at all times, regardless of his physical location.

Kanu also highlighted the role of Vice President Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, describing him as “a very capable Vice President” who guarantees continuity of governance whenever the president is outside the country.

“Yes, when the president is not here, the country will still run and there is a vice president,” Kanu said.

According to the presidential spokesman, President Bio’s foreign engagements in 2026 will be limited and largely tied to his responsibilities as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). He noted that most of the president’s trips will involve Abuja, Nigeria, where the ECOWAS headquarters is based, with other travels undertaken only when necessary.

Kanu further claimed that President Bio’s role as ECOWAS Chairman was instrumental in preventing casualties during the recent coup d’état in Burkina Faso, crediting his mediation efforts with ensuring that “no life was lost” during the crisis.

The comments follow President Bio’s New Year’s address, in which he pledged to focus on supervising key national priorities in 2026. Kanu’s remarks appear aimed at reassuring Sierra Leoneans that the president’s regional responsibilities will not undermine domestic governance.
