On the fourth day of his visit to Bonthe District, U.S. Ambassador David Reimer Hunt focused on the synergy between renewable energy development and environmental conservation during a tour of Sherbro Island.
Ambassador Hunt visited the proposed site for the Sherbro Windfarm Project, where he was briefed on the initiative’s transformative potential for local communities.
The project is poised to enhance energy access, drive sustainable development, and reduce reliance on non-renewable energy sources, making it a cornerstone of Sierra Leone’s renewable energy ambitions.
In addition to the windfarm site, Ambassador Hunt toured mangrove restoration areas and Hanging Sites, highlighting the critical role these ecosystems play in preserving biodiversity, combating climate change, and supporting the livelihoods of local communities.
He emphasized the need for sustainable management of Bonthe District’s natural resources to ensure their benefits are available for generations to come.
During his visit, Ambassador Hunt reiterated the United States’ commitment to supporting Sierra Leone’s renewable energy projects and conservation efforts.
He noted that initiatives like the Sherbro Windfarm and mangrove restoration not only align with environmental protection goals but also contribute to the broader agenda of sustainable economic growth.
