The main opposition, All Peoples Congress (APC) party has condemned the constant harassment, threat and intimidation against the Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr by agents of the ruling Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP).
The APC in press statement stated that since the mayor was elected to independently lead the Freetown City Council, she has been faced with sustained campaigns of harassment, threat and intimidation by the SLPP.
They further referred to the continuous attacks on Mayor Aki-Sawyerr as a political witch-hunt.
APC noted that in the last 3 months, the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC), the Parliamentary Public Account Committee (PAC), an the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development have all instituted investigations into the Mayor’s office on spurious allegations of corruption.
They noted the latest attempt to harass and intimidate the mayor was evident in the futile attempt by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development to dissolve the Mayor’s Delivery Unit (MDU).
The APC referred to the attack on the Mayor Aki-Sawyerr as a misogynistic act, and reassured their membership and the general public that they are firmly behind the mayor, noting that they will provide the necessary moral and political support for her to continue with good work she is doing for the municipality.
They further revealed that they have settled the differences between the mayor her deputy, a situation they said has the potential to weaken the council and gives advantage to the Ministry.
