Hon. Sirajin Rollings Kamara, one of the ten Members of Parliament evicted by the SLPP government despite certification of their 2018 electoral victories by the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL), has called for their entitlements to be honored.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas, Hon. Kamara highlighted their removal and the subsequent court ruling that replaced them without conducting new elections.
“Yet we go without benefits,” lamented Hon. Kamara, stressing their request for eleven months’ worth of salaries they had earned before their removal. The former MPs, now organized into an association, expressed their collective concern over the unresolved issue.
“We have formed an Association comprising former MPs,” stated the group, emphasizing their intent to support parliamentary development efforts. Speaker Segepoh Solomon Thomas acknowledged the initiative, noting the valuable parliamentary experience and insights possessed by former lawmakers
“I will ensure that the association becomes a vibrant entity to assist parliament and the government,” assured Speaker Thomas, recognizing the challenges faced by former MPs in finding employment due to their political influence.
The Speaker pledged to advocate for a budget allocation next year specifically aimed at supporting former MPs, enabling them to contribute effectively to parliamentary functions and national development initiatives.
These shameless MPs, they only make noise for their personal interest. Instead of fighting back when you were unconstitutionally removed from Parliament, all you do is beg for benefits. Ah poverty. This shows that outside of politics, most of our “honourables” have no means of employment.
