It is concerning to note that despite hosting two major revenue-generating companies, like Leone Rock, Salini Construction company (formally Salcost) Bumbuna town and its surrounding communities in the Northern District of Tonkolili are grappling with deplorable road conditions.
Against that backdrop, a lawmaker from the District, Hon. Jawa Sesay has on the 5th August 2024 expressed dissatisfaction over what he says is the total neglect of the Bumbuna and other roads in his home District.
In a short video, the lawmaker was seen expressing his dissatisfaction over the poor road network in the area and it’s affecting residents on a daily basis.
The MP was on his way to Bendugu Town to witness the payment of surface rent to Sambaia, Dansogoia and Simiria chiefdoms respectively.
The opposition politician said the dilapidated status of the road underscores the critical need for effective infrastructural development and equitable distribution of resources to ensure that local communities benefit from the presence of such companies.
He further recaps the just concluded opening of parliament by His Excellency the President Dr. Julius Maada Bio where he mentioned several of his road infrastructural development as part of the achievement of his government agenda. According to Hon Jawa Sesay, it’s sad that the President never mention about the road network of those that are hosting the two of the biggest companies that generate billions of Leone to the economy of this nation.
He continued by expressing that Improving road infrastructure from Magburaka to Bendugu will not only enhance the quality of life for residents living in Tonkolili District but also facilitates economic growth, ensures better connectivity, and attracts further investment and local businesses.
“It is crucial for the government and relevant stakeholders to prioritize addressing these infrastructural challenges to uplift the living standards of the residents in communities around Tonkolili District and unlock the full economic potential of the people,” Hon Jawa Sesay said.
The Honorable Member of Parliament’s emphasis on the issue highlights the importance of advocating for the well-being of constituents and holding companies and government authorities accountable for fulfilling their responsibilities towards the communities they operate in.
In his conclusion, he noted about his several advocacies he has been making in the well of parliament since he assumed office which mostly centred around improving the lives of ordinary citizens.
He highlighted robust steps which can be taken towards fostering sustainable development and improving the overall socio-economic landscape that can remedy this reoccurring situation.
